Life Cycle Assessment of the Hydro Flask

Overview

Using life-cycle assessment to understand the impact of the Hydro Flask stainless steel water bottle. Stainless bottles are often lauded for their reusable nature and are seen as an eco-friendly alternative to single-use plastic. However, while plastic seems more harmful than stainless steel, in-depth study of the bottle, from the extraction of raw materials to the end of life, reveals that extracting metals and manufacturing stainless steel is highly energy-intensive and ecologically harmful. In this project, I map the different processes used to make the bottle and I model them into Sustainable Minds. Lastly, I explore strategies to reduce the impact of the bottle.

Process Tree

Process tree diagram was used to understand the different processes and their impact across four main life stages of a prodcut - extraction of raw material, production, use and and of life.
