Google Play Academy: A strategy and usability study

Overview

Play Academy is an E-learning Platform for Android app developers to develop and grow their Android apps. The Play Academy team wanted to understand the reasons for low course completion rates and how to better design a course structure that fits user needs. A usability study was conducted to help design a more intuitive layout for easy navigation and discoverability of relevant courses.

Impact

  • Google Play Academy reorganizing the courseware by introducing course taxonomy. Designing course architecture based on app development stages to assist learners to navigate to the most relevant courses intuitively and easily

  • Changes in the usability and UI of the courses have been made more inclusive of different personas

  • Platform marketing altered to suit the specific personas and user types

  • Addition of learning experiences like ‘talk to the experts’ creating a community of developers

  • Highlighting platform credibility by informing the learners that the curators are from the Google Play team itself
